About Us
Greetings,
My name is Latoya Hodges, and I am one of the founders of the Kryptonite Disability Support Organization. I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, specifically in the Robert Taylor Homes. As the youngest and only daughter of my mother’s four children, I was inspired from an early age to help others, particularly those with disabilities.
My inspiration came from witnessing my mother, a single parent, struggle to care for my disabled brother. Due to a lack of resources, he was removed from our home and had to live in a rehabilitation facility. The only option available at the time was a center up north on Sheridan, where my brother stayed until he passed away. Despite being told he wouldn’t live past five years old because of his brain damage, with proper care and resources, my brother lived until he was 19. This experience showed me the profound impact that access to the right support can have on individuals with disabilities.
From that moment on, as I grew older and understood more, I felt a strong desire to help others facing similar challenges. This passion has carried into my adulthood, leading me to marry my husband, who was born with a disability. He has one finger and a thumb on one hand and no fingers on the other. Together, we have joined forces with others who share our commitment to making a difference.
We feel truly grateful and blessed to be in a position to carry out our mission: to alleviate stress and provide support to those in need. Our goal is to give back to the community and offer assistance wherever possible.
Additionally, my family has been deeply affected by Huntington’s disease, a genetic nerve disorder with no cure. My mother and most of her siblings succumbed to this disease, leaving only four of her thirteen siblings still with us. This personal experience further fuels our commitment to support and give back to those in need.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We are dedicated to continuing our mission and making a meaningful impact.
Sincerely,
Latoya Hodges
